- 1 min read
One in four Americans 65 and older falls every year, and falls are the leading cause of injury for seniors. The good news: most falls are preventable with simple home modifications. Use this checklist room by room.
Bathroom (Highest Risk Zone)
Install grab bars next to the toilet and inside the shower
Add a non-slip mat inside the tub and on the floor
Use a shower chair and a handheld showerhead
Add a raised toilet seat if standing up is difficult
Stairs and Hallways
Make sure handrails are tight and run the full length of stairs
Add bright, motion-activated nightlights in halls and bathrooms
Remove throw rugs or secure them with non-slip backing
Living Areas and Bedroom
Clear walking paths of cords, magazines, and pet toys
Make sure their bed is at a height where their feet touch the floor when seated
Keep a phone and flashlight on the nightstand
Beyond the Home
Ask their doctor to review medications — some cause dizziness or affect balance. Schedule annual vision and hearing checks. Encourage strength and balance exercises (Tai Chi has strong evidence). And if you've already seen one fall, don't wait — a caregiver assisting with bathing and mobility is the single best fall reducer.
